Obama did not, as Jardin claimed, “blow” his reference: he was more correct than any of his critics could possibly imagine.įirst, as a friend pointed out, there is a Jedi Meld well established within the admittedly capacious but nonetheless official contours of the Star Wars: Expanded Universe. Out of a nascent sense of patriotism, and animated by the spirit of my friend Matt Stempeck’s LazyTruth, I now reluctantly but firmly step forward in defense of my President against these reckless and ill-founded accusations. Jim Kuhnhenn of the Associated Press wrote that Obama “…mixed his sci-fi metaphors…The Jedi reference comes from Star Wars, and the mind meld from Star Trek.” Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing wrote that the President “tried to drop a gratuitous nerd culture reference…and blew it.” #ObamaSciFiQuotes began trending on Twitter, mocking Obama for his apparent misstep. However, some have rushed to the President's defense, Garance Franke-Ruta tweeted, "Not a mixed reference: There is a Jedi Mind Meld, apparently: ". I think it's time to impeach." Matthew Callan tweeted, "By referring to a 'Jedi mind meld,' Obama has opened himself up to charges of being a fake geek girl." Because President Obama has often sold himself as a geek president well-versed in the world of comic books and science fiction, it has sparked quite a few jokes on Twitter.ĭepressed Darth Vader tweeted, "Obama just confused Star Trek and Star Wars by saying Jedi Mind Meld. President Obama likely either meant"Jedi mind trick" which comes from Star Wars or "Vulcan mind meld" which comes from Star Trek. Of course, there is no such thing as a "Jedi mind meld" in the Star Wars movies or Star Trek TV show or movies. In a press conference earlier today, President Obama said, ""I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that's been floating around Washington that somehow, even though most people agree that I'm being reasonable, that most people agree I'm presenting a fair deal, the fact that they don't take it means that I should somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what's right." Twitter is in an uproar because President Barack Obama has misspoken and apparently confused his Star Wars with his Star Trek.
